A 5.5 magnitude tectonic quake rocked southwestern Bengkulu about 04:13 am on Sunday, the Meteorological and Geophysical Agency in Kotabumi and Maritime Meteorological Station in Panjang reported. The tremble was located at 4,41 degree South Latitude and 101,22 East Longitude, 134 km southwest Bengkulu city, Bengkulu province, ANTARA reported. The epicenter was recorded at 13 km below the sea level. Earlier this week, two people were killed and two others seriously injured in a magnitude 7.2 earthquake that hit Mentawai Islands off Sumatra`s western coast on Monday. The two were killed shortly after the quake rocked the area. However, the provincial government received a report on their death only three days later because of poor communication, he said. The dead victims were identified as Ridwan and Rosmilda, Sumatra Governor Gamawan Fauzi said. Monday's quake destroyed tens of houses at Saumangnyak village in Mentawi Islands, leaving 233 families displaced. However, over 200 trauma-stricken people evacuated to higher grounds for fear of aftershocks. The quake caused major damage to 17 houses and lighter damage to 45 homes and the collapse of a senior high school building.
