Secretary-General of the Regional Organization for the Conservation of the Environment of the Red Sea and Gulf of Aden (PERSGA), Prof. Ziad Abu-Ghararah launched here today a regional training workshop for representatives from the Red Sea and Gulf of Aden and the Gulf states at the Organization's in Jeddah. The workshop was held in cooperation with the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) with participation of countries in the region and member states of the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) in addition to regional and international experts with extensive experiences in this area, said Abu Ghararah in the opening speech. He stressed the importance of applying compensation procedures for the destruction of coral reefs resulting from stranded ships and boats as a foundation to preserve the marine environment since it makes the user of the marine environment feel and aware of financial consequences which will lead less likely to fall in accidents leading to damage to the environment. "Accidents and collisions of ships and boats to coral reefs are one of the reasons for the destruction of coral reefs in the region. The proportion of incidents of coral reefs collision increased in countries with a high marine tourism where the dive-boats represent a permanent danger to coral reefs and increase the stranding rate in those countries," he added. --MORE
