Four people were crushed to death and three were injured when a wild elephant ran amok in India's northern Uttarakhand state on Thursday, news reports said, according to dpa. It happened at Khuddaheri village in Haridwar district, about 50 kilometres south-west of the state capital Dehra Dun, PTI news agency reported. The elephant strayed into the village from an adjoining national park and attacked villagers when they surrounded it, forest officials were quoted as saying. The forest department has issued orders to shoot the elephant. "We are trying to track the elephant and it will be killed," Haridwar forest official Nishant Verma said.
