Two Ukrainians died and eight were injured in an amusement park ride accident, the Interfax news agency reported Saturday. The spinning centrifuge-style carousel had been operating in the eastern city Luhansk, according to DPA. Passengers filling seats to capacity were flung metres from the ride when a support section detached and slammed upwards, witnesses said. A man and a woman died almost instantly. Eight persons were hospitalised with varying degrees of injuries, and were expected to survive, according to the report. Local businessmen had set up the ride without approval of city safety inspectors, claimed Serhy Kravchenko, Luhansk's mayor. An official at the Luhansk city inspection service contradicted the mayor, saying the ride "had passed all appropriate safety inspections," Channel 5 television reported.
