The Secretary General of the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) Abdulrahman bin Hamad Al-Attiyah called here today for a genuine partnership between the Secretariat of the Gulf Cooperation Council and Arab chambers of commerce and industry in the GCC countries to contribute to the activation of the Gulf common market and transfer them into reality. In a speech delivered during a meeting organized by Bahrain's Chamber of Commerce and Industry, Al-Attiyah stressed the importance of speeding up the issuance of legislative and legal instruments in the GCC countries which would accelerate the pace of implementation of the entire Gulf common market tracks. He expressed his looking to achieve monetary union and unified Gulf currency as directed by the GCC summit in Muscat in 2001 and confirmed by the recent Doha summit of the commitment of Member States to achieve that and assign Finance Ministers and Governors of Monetary Institutions and central banks to develop a detailed schedule for the completion of all the requirements of monetary union.
