As the conflict in Iraq moves into its sixth year, U.N. Secretary-General Ban Ki-Moon is still committed to helping the Iraqi people, his spokeswoman said Wednesday. Thursday marks the fifth anniversary of the U.S.-led invasion of Iraq, which has cost the United States $500 billion and claimed the lives of tens of thousands of Iraqis. “The U.N. has been doing all it can and will continue to do so working under Security Council resolution 1770 that has helped them hold two national elections and the drafting of the constitution in Iraq,” spokeswoman Michele Montas said. “The United Nations has also worked to promote national reconciliation, regional dialogue, the international compact, the protection of human rights, and the provision of humanitarian, reconstruction, and development assistance, and the Secretary General is committed to seeing the United Nations doing more for the support of the people in Iraq,” Montas added.
