A severe winter storm packing winds of up to 120 kilometres an hour caused heavy damage in Austria on Sunday, DPA reported. In the southern provinces of Carinthia and Styria up to 90,000 households were affected by power outages and two persons were severely injured by a dislodged roof, public broadcaster ORF said. Large numbers of uprooted trees blocked roads and railway lines, leading to substantial delays in train services or damaged power lines. The south-bound motorway A2 was closed down in several locations because of road obstructed by fallen trees and malfunctioning tunnel lights due to power outages. The storm was even stronger in the Austrian Alps, reaching up to 150 kilometres an hour. Meteorologists expected the strong winds to continue all Sunday, in particular in eastern parts of the country.
