President Pervez Musharraf says the government has crushed extremist elements in Swat with the help of people and the armed forces. Addressing a function jointly organized by the state-run Pakistan Television or PTV and Sindh government to pay tribute to the founder of Pakistan Quaid-e-Azam Mohammad Ali Jinnah in connection with his 131st birth anniversary at his mausoleum in Karachi Tuesday night, Musharraf said the menace of extremism and terrorism has taken a new dimension and 'we need to control this.' These elements, he said, were trying to spread from the tribal region to settled areas. "This has been controlled. I want to pay tribute to armed forces and people of Swat who supported the armed forces in crushing the increasing terrorism in this area." The president said the government has again put on rails the wheel of democracy and nobody will be allowed to disrupt election process. He urged people to elect their representatives in accordance with their wishes. He said January 8 elections will have a special significance and there is no doubt that these will be fair and transparent.
