A total of 356 people have been killed in 431 road accidents in Jambi province since early this year, ANTARA quoted police as saying. The figure was lower than that of last year when 396 people were killed in 451 road accidents, Senior Commissioner Bambang Budi Santoso, traffic director of the Jambi provincial police, said on Friday. However, the number of people who sustained serious and light injuries this year rose respectively to 263 from 257 and to 180 from 170 a year earlier. The increasing number of vehicles, particularly motorcycles, was partly to blame for the higher number of road accidents, he said. The number of motorcycles grew by 85,998 units to 620,170 units this year from 534,172 units last year, or an average increase by 7,167 units per month, he said. Meanwhile, the number of cars also increased by 4,084 units to 91,997 units this year from 96,081 units last year, he said.
