Up to the end of 1427 the number of dams in the Kingdom amounted to 230 with a storage capacity of 1,138,776,375 cubic meter. 60 dams are in Riyadh region, 27 in Makkah region, 16 in Madinah region, 65 in Assir region, 17 in Hail region, 26 in Baha region, 6 in Najran region, 4 in Qassim region, 3 in Jazan region, 3 in Joaf region, two in Tabuk region and one in the Northern Borders region. According to a report issued by the ministry of water and electricity, the spread of dams in the Kingdom embodies the great attention being given by the Government to the water resources. The storage capacity of King Fahd dam in Wadi Bisha is more than 325 million cubic meter , while the storage capacity of Najran dam is more than 86 million cubic meter. The dam of Najran region plays an important role in protecting n Najran city from the dangers of floods, and moreover it makes ground water available in the region. The storage capacity of Jazan dam amounts to 50 million cubic meter. This makes it possible for the dam to irrigate an area of more than 6000 hectare. --more
