The crew of a Greek ferry rescued 43 would-be immigrants off the coast of the Mediterranean island of Crete early Saturday, Greek radio NET reported, according to dpa. The boat, occupied by would-be immigrants from various North African countries, was in danger of capsizing in choppy seas around 20 nautical miles from the port city of Rethmon in Crete. One of the migrants alerted the Greek coastguard via mobile phone, the report said. It remained unclear from where the would-be migrants had set sail. The Aegean Sea is one of the routes used by international trafficking rings to bring would-be migrants into the European Union.
