Romania has made good progress but needs to do more to battle against endemic graft, European Commission President Jose Manuel Barroso said Friday, AP reported. «There is no room for complacency in the fight against corruption and organized crime. Anything the Romanian authorities can do (to fight corruption) should be pursued ... and they should keep on in this direction,» said Barroso, making his first trip to Romania since it joined the 27-member bloc on Jan. 1. Barroso praised Romania for creating the Agency for Integrity _ a specialist government organization designed to tackle corruption. The government also introduced a bill regulating conflict of interest for public officials. Guilty officials could have their assets confiscated and be barred from running for public office for three years under the new laws. The EU has warned Romania in the past about the country's failure to curb rampant corruption.
