Maldivian President Abdul Gayoom led Dhiveli Rayyithunge Party (DRP) to win a referendum on a new constitutional system Sunday, according to DPA. The official results were expected later Sunday night, but provisional results indicated that 62 per cent had voted in favour of the presidential system of government rather than adopting a parliamentary system. A government spokesman in Male denied allegations of irregularities and said that the poll was held with the presence of international observers. Some 193,000 voters were registered to vote, but only 150,000 had turned up for voting. Reports from Male said the situation remained normal after the poll and no incidents reported.
