Voters in Luxembourg approved the European Union Constitution by a comfortable majority in Sunday's referendum, according to official results. Voting commission officials said that the final result showed a 56.52 per cent backing for the much maligned treaty which had been rejected by French and Dutch voters in previous referendums, dpa reported. That left 43.48 per cent of Luxembourg voters opposed to the E.U. Constitution, according to results. Around 223,000 citizens were eligible to vote in the referendum. Turnout was reported to be 86.8 per cent. The referendum is not officially binding, but all parties have agreed to respect the result. A majority No vote was registered in just nine of Luxembourg's 118 voting districts. Seven of these are in the region bordering France where there is more concern over unemployment. In the capital, Luxembourg City, 61.4 per cent voted in favour of the constitution. --More 2227 Local Time 1927 GMT
