Customs officials confiscated 100,000 euros (136,000 dollars) that a Nigerian tried to smuggle into Germany hidden in dirty socks, according to dpa. The money was found during a search of the man's luggage after he arrived at Hahn airport near Frankfurt on a flight from Norway, customs officials said Wednesday. The 38-year-old Nigerian had failed to declare the money and was unable to explain its origin when quizzed by customs officials last week. Police suspect it came from illegal activities. Since June 15, travellers arriving in Germany from outside the European Union are required to declare cash amounts above 10,000 euros (13,600 dollars). Violations are punishable by a fine of up to 1 million euros.
