Zimbabwean police have arrested a Nigerian man for trying to smuggle large amounts of scarce foreign currency out of the country hidden inside his sandals, the state-controlled Herald newspaper reported Thursday. Anthony Chinedu Kelech Olua was arrested Monday at Harare International Airport as he tried to board an evening flight for an abroad destination with more than 26,000 U.S. dollars, 220 British pounds and 720 euros, the paper was quoted by dpa as saying. "It was observed that while checking in at the Harare international airport, the sandals Olua was wearing had bulges," police spokesman Wayne Bvudzijena told the paper. "On opening the sandals, it was discovered that he was hiding 26,995 dollars, 220 pounds and 720 euros," he said. The police spokesman said Olua, who is still in police custody, was due to appear in court soon. He said the Nigerian had been travelling on a Zimbabwean passport. There are strict limits on the amount of foreign currency a person can take out of Zimbabwe. --SP 1041 Local Time 0741 GMT
