Nine people were killed and two injured when their van collided head-on with a bus in southern India's Tamil Nadu state Thursday, DPA reported. The accident occured near Seevalpuri town, about 550 kilometres south of the Tamil Nadu capital Chennai, the PTI news agency reported. Eight people, all passengers of the van, died on the spot while one of the injured succumbed on the way to hospital. All the victims belonged to the same family. They were on their way to visit a shrine in a nearby town, the police said. More than 110,000 people are killed in the traffic accidents in India annually, one of the highest fatality rates in the world. The accidents usually occur due to the poor condition of roads and vehicles as well as rash driving.
