A politician was shot dead and his security guard seriously injured in an attack by suspected militants in India-administered Kashmir, police said Sunday. Militants fired at Jan Mohammed Kakroo, a district leader of the ruling Congress party, when he was returning from Baramulla town on Saturday evening, dpa reported. "Kakroo succumbed to the injuries on the scene," a police official said requesting anonymity. The politician's bodyguard was seriously injured in the firing in Baramulla, which lies more than 50 kilometres north-west of state capital Srinagar. Police and security forces were continuing search operations but no arrests had been made. No militant group had claimed responsibility for the attack.
