Nigeria's politicians began electioneering Sunday as the country's electoral body, the Independent National Electoral Commission, blew the whistle for the official start of the campaign, reported Deutsche Presse Agentur dpa. The election of national parliamentarians and a president to succeed President Olusegun Obasanjo is expected to be held on April 21. According to the Chairman of the electoral commission, Professor Maurice Iwu, the federal government-run agency has so far registered more than 40 million voters. Last Friday, Iwu told a visiting European Union election monitoring team in Abuja Friday that before the end of voters registration on January 30, every eligible voter would have been registered. He said from Monday, January 15, the commission would intensify its awareness campaign on voter registration for more Nigerians to be registered before the deadline. Nigeria has a population of 140 million.
