BOSNIA-HERZEGOVINA'S ELECTION COMMISSION DECLARED THURSDAY IN SARAJEVO GENERAL ELECTIONS IN THE COUNTRY AND CALLED ON POLITICAL PARTIES AND INDEPENDENT CANDIDATES TO REGISTER FOR THE ELECTIONS, DPA REPORTED. THE INDIRECT GENERAL ELECTIONS, ACCORDING TO COMMISSION CHAIRMAN BRANKO PERIC, WILL BE HELD NEXT OCTOBER 1, A SUNDAY. MORE THAN 2,644,500 VOTERS IN BOSNIA, HE SAID, WOULD BE CALLED TO VOTE FOR THE PRESIDENCY AND THE PARLIAMENT OF BOSNIA-HERZEGOVINA, AS WELL AS FOR PRESIDENTS AND ASSEMBLIES OF TWO BOSNIA'S ETHNIC ENTITIES - THE SRPSKA REPUBLIC AND THE MUSLIM-CROAT FEDERATION. VOTERS IN THE FEDERATION WOULD ALSO VOTE FOR THE AUTHORITIES OF 10 CANTONS OF THE MUSLIM-CROAT FEDERATION. THE ELECTION COMMISSION ALSO SAID FINANCIAL ASSETS FOR THE PRE- ELECTION CAMPAIGN WERE SIGNIFICANTLY CUT AS WELL AS THE PERIOD FOR PRE-ELECTION CAMPAIGN, WHICH WAS REDUCED FROM 60 TO 30 DAYS. THE ELECTIONS, ACCORDING TO LIDIJA KORAC OF THE COMMISSION, SHOULD COST BETWEEN EIGHT AND NINE MILLION CONVERTIBLE MARKS (5.04-5.66 MILLION DOLLARS). THIS YEAR'S GENERAL ELECTIONS IN BOSNIA WOULD BE THE SECOND ELECTIONS ORGANIZED AND IMPLEMENTED SOLELY BY BOSNIAN AUTHORITIES SINCE THE END OF THE COUNTRY'S 1992-1995 WAR. THE INTERNATIONAL COMMUNITY, LED BY THE ORGANIZATION FOR SECURITY AND COOPERATION IN EUROPE (OSCE) HAD ORGANIZED ELECTIONS IN BOSNIA- HERZEGOVINA UNTIL 2002.
