Many Bosnians ignored local polls on Saturday in which the main Muslim, Serb and Croat nationalist parties are expected to remain dominant nine years after the end of the 1992-5 war. The state election commission said only one third of 2.3 million registered voters cast their ballots by 4 p.m. (1400 GMT) but expressed hope that the turnout may rise by the end of voting at 1700 GMT. "I think that turnout may rise by 10-15 percent," said state election commission member Lidija Korac. Most of 4,000 polling stations closed on time except for a few that opened later due to technical problems. The first preliminary results are expected around midnight on Saturday.
