At least 22 people were killed and 30 others injured as a speeding bus rammed against a wayside tree before plunging into a derelict canal on the outskirts of the capital Dhaka on Friday, police and witnesses said, according to DPA. Rescuers said the accident happened amidst thick fog which had dangerously reduced visibility on the highways. Nineteen people were killed on the spot while three others died at a local hospital where the injured were admitted for treatment. An estimated 70 construction workers were travelling on the bus at the time of the accident. The workers were returning to their jobs in Dhaka after spending the extended Islamic Eid-ul-Adha holidays. The country's worst highway accident in the new year occurred two kilometres south of the garrison town of Savar.
