Army and fire-brigade rescuers abandoned hope of finding any more survivors in a collapsed clothing factory in Bangladesh as six more bodies were removed from the rubble Saturday, bringing the number of confirmed dead to 60 with 113 still missing. "It will be a miracle if anyone is still alive in the wreckage," said Brigadier General Nizam Ahmad, who is coordinating the rescue operation. Ahmad said it would take one more week to clear away the rubble from the disaster. In Bangladesh's worst industrial accident so far more than 200 garment workers, including many women, were buried alive after a multi-storey factory collapsed on them Monday following a loud explosion in the boiler room. An estimated 84 workers were rescued alive Monday from the site in the industrial town of Savar, 25 kilometres west of the capital Dhaka. The search for bodies amidst the jungle of concrete and steel was hampered by the heat of a scorching Bangladeshi summer and the foul odour from rotting human flesh. "We had to go very carefully at the beginning of the rescue operation while prying into the ruins so that the lives of trapped survivors were not at risk due to the use of heavy demolition equipment for clearing the debris," rescue worker Abdul Alim said. -- SPA 2313 Local Time 2013 GMT
