A car blaze in the Greek capital Athens initially believed by police to have been a thwarted terrorist attack was Thursday confirmed to have been the work of a mentally unstable individual, Greek radio said in a report carried by DPA. Police said that following intensive investigations the blaze, which occurred overnight Wednesday in a car park attached to Athens University, was found to have been set by a psychologically-disturbed southern Greek native who had recently left his wife and who wished to take his own life in "spectacular fashion". The man had loaded the boot of his car with cans of fuel and a gas canister, parked in front of the university and set the vehicle ablaze. However he had a change of heart and fled the scene. Firefighters coming accidentally upon the blazing car extinguished the blaze, but the discovery of the extra fuel led police to initially surmise that it was an attempted terrorist attack. Police said that had the fuel and gas ignited, there could have been severe injuries to passers-by and considerable property damage. --SP 22 32 Local Time 19 32 GMT
