Police used a controlled explosion late Tuesday to destroy a small homemade bomb outside the home of a respected newspaper publisher, authorities said. According to police, the bomb contained three small cooking gas canisters and was placed inside a box in front of the house of Christos Tegopoulos, publisher of the Athens daily Eleftherotypia. There were no injuries or damages. The attack came one day after Philipos Syrigos, a sports writer working at the same newspaper, was seriously hurt in an attack by at least three hooded men armed with a knife and iron bars. He was listed in stable condition after undergoing surgery in an Athens hospital. Syrigos, a sports writer known for his controversial reports, is one of few outspoken Greek journalists on issue of doping in athletics and had recently been working closely with Greek authorities on several cases and ongoing investigations.
