About 35,000 households remained without electricity Friday on Tenerife for the fifth day after tropical storm Delta wreaked havoc on the Canary Islands, the power company Unelco-Endesa said a statement carried by reported Deutsche Presse Agentur (DPA)Deutsche Presse Agentur (DPA). The Canaries regional authorities launched an investigation Thursday to determine whether the company could have restored power more rapidly. Unelco-Endesa said 15,000 households were without electricity in the southwest, 13,000 in Santa Cruz and 7,000 in La Laguna. Power was expected to be restored during the day. The collapse of several electricity pylons had left 300,000 people without power in Santa Cruz and La Laguna for three days. The 25th storm of a record Atlantic hurricane season, Delta killed up to 19 people on the Canaries including 18 African illegal immigrants believed to have drowned when their boat capsized.
