Flights were cancelled or delayed on Spain's Canary Islands on Monday as the first winds of Atlantic tropical storm Delta hit the archipelago, DPA reported. Winds of up to 92 kilometres an hour were registered on La Palma airport. Several flights between the islands were cancelled and others suffered delays of up to 47 minutes. A flight from Amsterdam was deviated from La Palma to Tenerife south airport. A German tourist was hit by a falling treetop and injured in the leg in Santa Cruz de la Palma. The storm had been expected to weaken before reaching the islands. The Canaries authorities suspended classes in schools. The Spanish interior ministry advised the population to avoid travelling by road, to keep away from beaches and risky places such as walls which could collapse, and to remove objects that could fall. Authorities on El Hierro Island advised the 7,500 residents to stay indoors. The storm was expected to bring winds of up to 125 kilometres an hour, heavy rain and waves four metres high. Delta is the 25th storm of a record Atlantic hurricane season. It was formed over the sea and remained stationary south of the Azores Islands before moving towards the Canaries.
