Poland's prime minister-designate said Tuesday it was still unclear whether coalition talks would succeed between his conservative Law and Justice party and the pro-market Civic Platform party. Kazimierz Marcinkiewicz said in an interview on state radio that he remained optimistic that a government would be formed, but that there appeared to be uncertainty on the part of Civic Platform leaders Donald Tusk and Jan Rokita on whether to join a government at all. As talks continued Tuesday, Rokita indicated that the talks were in "crisis." "Undoubtedly we have to work through a crisis, and we are going to try to reasonably overcome it in the interest of the country," Rokita, who has been designated deputy prime minister, told reporters before a meeting with Marcinkiewicz. The talks formally began Monday, a day after Law and Justice presidential candidate Lech Kaczynski defeated Tusk in a runoff, strengthening his party's hand, the Associated Press reported.
