A former navy lieutenant was killed when his parachute failed to open during a skydiving exhibition in the Philippines, an air force spokesman said in a statement carried by dpa Friday. Josefino Marcillones, who resinged from the service two years ago, was a guest jumper in an airborne training mission in Basa Airbase in Pampanga province, 75 kilometres north of Manila, on Thursday. "His parachute failed to open during the jump," said Major Augusto dela Pena, a spokesman for the air force. "He jumped from a C-130 plane about 6,000 feet above ground." Dela Pena said 120 marines took part in the training mission. Marcillones, a 1994 graduate of the premier Philippine Military Academy, was an officer of the navy's special warfare group and an intelligence officer before resigning. He was a security officer of Ayala Corporation, one of the country's top companies at the time of his death. --SP 1434 Local Time 1134 GMT
