Consul Generals of different Muslim countries based in Karachi have been given a detailed briefing about local council elections being on August 18 and 25, according to an official statement. Consul Generals of Saudi Arabia, Afghanistan, Iran, Indonesia, Kuwait, Oman, Turkey, United Arab Emirates, Malaysia and Libya and Deputy High Commissioner of Bangladesh attended the briefing. Sindh Chief Minister Arbab Ghulam Rahim invited these diplomats to visit the polling stations on the day of elections. He told the diplomats that his government will ensure that elections were held in a free, transparent and impartial manner. He said elaborate arrangements have been made by the government for holding these elections in a peaceful environment. Rahim said all the provincial ministers and advisors have been directed to ensure compliance with the Code of Conduct as laid down by the Election Commission of Pakistan. The chief minister said the elections are being conducted in the province under the Sindh Local Government Ordinance (SLGO) with the objective of transferring the power to common people. This will enable them to participate in the development and progress of the country, he added.
