Firefighters Thursday brought under control a wildfire which has raged for four days, devastating more than 5,100 hectares of Spain's biggest nature reserve, according to DPA. About 1,500 people who were evacuated as a precaution from the Cazorla National Park were able to return to their homes and lodgings. Known for its varied landscapes, the 214,000-hectare park in the southern province of Jaen is popular among hikers. A smaller wildfire was also brought under control near Ciudad Real. Officials in Murcia said a 43-year-old worker died of heatstroke at a local hospital. He was the third known fatality of this summer's heatwave, which has begun subsiding in parts of the country. In neighbouring Portugal, the risk of new wildfires persisted especially in the north and centre of the country. Duarte Caldeira, president of the Professional Firefighters' Association, questioned government information about this year's wildfires. The government has said the blazes ravaged 68,166 hectares of forest and bush, but Caldeira said more than 100,000 hectares were affected.
