New wildfires erupted in Spain, where firefighters have been combating eight blazes in northern Orense province, officials said Monday.
Another fire consumed an unknown number of bush near Nerja in the south. About 120 firefighters brought a blaze under control in Lorca near Murcia after flames devoured 200 hectares of vegetation.
Similar fires destroyed tens of thousands of hectares of forest and scrub in Spain and Portugal last week, forcing hundreds of people to leave their homes. An elderly couple burned to death in their car in southern Spain.
Authorities attribute the fires to high temperatures, drought, carelessness and arson. --SP 1301 Local Time 1001 GMT
