A firefight Sunday between U.S. forces and rebels left an American soldier dead and another wounded, while an insurgent was also killed and two others injured in the battle in southern Afghanistan, the U.S. military said. Between 15 and 20 militants attacked the U.S. patrol in Helmand province's Gereshk district, the military said in a statement. An interpreter employed by the American forces was also wounded in the attack. The wounded U.S. soldier and the interpreter, as well as the two wounded insurgents, were transported to Kandahar Airfield for treatment. The other rebels fled the area after the attack and U.S. ground troops and attack aircraft were searching for them. The name of the deceased soldier was withheld pending notification of his family, The Associated Press reported.
