A U.S. soldier deployed in northern Iraq was killed in a small-arms fire attack, the military said Friday. The Task Force Freedom soldier was shot in Mosul on Thursday, the military said in a statement. A separate assault in Mosul on Wednesday took the life of another U.S. soldier, who died in a car bomb attack while patrolling the volatile city. Three other soldiers were wounded in the blast. Mosul is 360 kilometers (225 miles) northwest of Baghdad. As is customary in the military, the deceased soldiers' names were withheld pending notification of next of kin. As of Thursday, at least 1,471 members of the U.S. military have died since the beginning of the Iraq war in March 2003, according to an Associated Press count.
