New York City plans to install for the first time high-tech surveillance systems to protect underwater tunnels leading into Manhattan following the terrorist bombings in London's subway, the New York Daily News said Monday, according to dpa. The Metropolitan Transportation Authority (MTA), responsible for the networks of subway, buses, and tunnels connecting Manhattan with the suburbs, would spend 400 million dollars to install the surveillance systems, the News said. The MTA received close to 600 million dollars to improve anti-terrorist measures after the September 11, 2001, terrorist attacks against the World Trade Center in New York. But it has been blamed for spending only a fraction of that money in anti-terrorist measures in the past four years. The bombing attacks of London's subway and a bus on July 7, which killed at least 54 people and injured more than 700, prompted the MTA to get into action to protect New York City. --More 2330 Local Time 2030 GMT
