Apple is to switch its computers to Intel- based chips, bringing the iconic company in line with most of the world's other computer makers, chief executive Steve Jobs announced Monday. The move was seen as a blow to IBM and Motorola, which had provided the processors for Macintosh computers for decades. But according to Jobs, the companies were no longer able to provide increased chip performance at a rate that would have kept Apple at the forefront of innovation, dpa reported. "Our goal is to provide our customers with the best personal computers in the world, and looking ahead, Intel has the strongest processor roadmap by far," Jobs told an audience at the company's annual Worldwide Developer Conference. "It's been 10 years since our transition to the PowerPC, and we think Intel's technology will help us create the best personal computers for the next 10 years," he said. Intel chips currently power about 80 per cent of the world's personal computers. Its main rival, AMD, uses the same basic chip architecture. --More 2259 Local Time 1959 GMT
