One soldier was killed and five wounded when a powerful roadside bomb exploded as their vehicle passed in southern Thailand Sunday, police said. The explosive, believed to weigh more than 10 kilograms (22 pounds), was planted in a fire extinguisher on a bridge in the Malaysian border province of Narathiwat and triggered by a wire that led into a nearby plantation, said police Lt. Suwit Phusathit. The bomb killed Sgt. Maj. Pichai Wongsomsueb and seriously wounded five other soldiers in the military vehicle which was severely damaged, he said, according to AP. In the adjacent province of Yala, a two-story building of an elementary public school was burned down Saturday night, leaving students without classrooms as they prepared to return from a long summer break on Monday.
