A U.S. Marine died when an insurgent mortar round landed inside a military base in western Iraq, the military said Friday. The marine, assigned to the 2nd Marine Division, 2nd Marine Expeditionary Force, died after a Wednesday attack at Camp Hit, in Anbar province, the military said. No other details were released. The marine's name is being withheld pending notification of next of kin. As of Thursday, April 14, 2005, at least 1,548 members of the U.S. military have died since the beginning of the Iraq war in March 2003, according to an Associated Press count. At least 1,178 died as a result of hostile action, according to the Defense Department. The figures include four military civilians.
