Five Spanish police officers were killed early Tuesday in an accident at a roadblock protecting an international anti-terrorism summit opening in Madrid later in the day. A lorry driven by a Romanian national crashed into the four police vehicles forming the checkpoint, killing five and seriously injuring two officers near Buitrago de Lozoya outside the capital. The lorry driver, who was almost unharmed in the accident, was detained. Officials said he had apparently fallen asleep while driving. More than 7,000 police were protecting the international anti-terrorism summit marking the first anniversary of the Madrid train bombings, which killed 191 and injured more than 1,500 people on March 11, 2004. Crown Prince Felipe was scheduled to inaugurate the three-day summit attended by more than 20 heads of state or government and some 200 experts from over 50 countries.
