Seven kilometres away from the Prophet's Holy Mosque, the Central Air Conditioning Station is located on an area of 70,000 square metres and comprises the world's largest concentrator to cool water. The central station system is highly efficient; it adjusts the level of cooling based on the outdoor temperature to maintain a constant, comfortable atmosphere. The system also freshens the air, as the dome of the mosque opens and closes at specific times. The station, with six coolers of a capacity of 3,400 tonnes each and capable of cooling water up to five degrees, uses the latest mechanisms and techniques to distribute inbound water from the station in an accurate, consistent and automated way. The inbound water from the station then reaches 151 air treatment units for distribution and cooling, and the mosque is cooled with air pumped via pipes connected to the mosque pillars. The water-cooling cycle is completed once water returns through insulated pipes to the central station. At the same time, 436 misting fans are installed across the courtyards of the Prophet's Holy Mosque to purify the air and lower the heat, for worshippers to feel comfortable. The network of the fans undergoes continuous sterilization to make sure that water is free from bacteria, and thus safeguarding the visitors' safety. The Agency of the General Presidency for the Affairs of Prophet's Mosque works with specialized national engineering and technical cadres to execute the required maintenance works for the station, monitors its performance, renews any needed parts of the system and services it around the clock to ensure that it operates with highest efficiency.
