Israel's president took a cruise in Sydney's landmark harbor Monday amid tight security, after arriving for a seven-day visit to Australia. Israeli President Moshe Katsav was scheduled to spend two days in Sydney meeting with state government officials, business representatives and members of the city's Jewish community. He will then travel to Canberra, where he will attend a luncheon hosted by Prime Minister John Howard and a state dinner with the British Queen's representative in Australia, Governor-General Michael Jeffery. Katsav also plans to meet with the leader of Australia's opposition Labor party, Kim Beazley. The tour marks Katsav's first visit to Australia, and the first Australian visit by an Israeli president since Chaim Herzog in 1986.
