Chancellor Gerhard Schroeder said Germany would probably take part in reconstruction efforts in Iraq once security in the country had been established, it was reported Saturday. "A phase will come in Iraq when the security situation allows us to take part in the restoration of the infrastructure or in building up the administration," he said in an newspaper interview to be published Sunday. Schroeder told Frankfurter Allgemeine Sonntagszeitung he was convinced Iraq could develop as a democracy. Schroeder said Germany was willing to support the Iraq reconstruction effort in such areas as police training, debt relief and ministry-building "if the new Iraqi government so wishes it".
