The Heritage Commission today announced the registration and documentation of 67 new archaeological sites at the National Archaeological Register, which includes a number of archaeological and historical sites, bringing the total number of sites registered to date to 8,531 archaeological sites across the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia. The Northern Borders Region accounted for the biggest share with 15 sites, followed by Tabuk with 13, Hail 10, Al-Jawf 9, Al-Qassim 5 and Riyadh and Asir with 4 sites each, Al-Madinah and Al-Baha with 3 sites each, and one site in Makkah region. The registration of these sites by the Heritage Commission is based on the bylaw of antiquities and urban heritage issued by Royal Decree No. (M/3) on 9/1/1436 AH, where the commission seeks to explore and officially record archaeological and historical sites across the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia in the National Archaeological Register and then drop them on digital maps that enable their easy management, protection and preservation, as well as build a spatial database of registered archaeological sites, preserve and document the work being carried out, and archive documents and photographs of the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia's heritage sites. The commission called on citizens to report any archaeological sites discovered through the platform "Balagh", commending the efforts of citizens over the past period, and emphasizing the role of citizens in reporting archaeological sites through cooperation with the offices and branches of the commission in various regions, which enable the commission to access and register these sites, where the commission is considered an essential partner in the preservation and care of national heritage.
