Avalanches killed nine people and injured three others in Tajikistan, the Emergencies Ministry said Friday. Several avalanches struck the mountains of eastern Tajikistan on Thursday, burying more than 50 homes in snow, the ministry said. Some main roads linking the capital, Dushanbe, with mountainous regions were blocked. Mountains cover about 90 percent of the impoverished Central Asian country and avalanches are common in winter and early spring.
