Ahmed Aboul Gheit, Secretary-General of the Arab League, welcomed Egypt's hosting of the UN Climate Change Conference (COP 27), which will be held at the end of 2022, calling on the Arab countries to actively participate in this session. In a statement issued today, Aboul Gheit reiterated the Arab League's full support for the UAE's request to host (COP 28) conference, to be held in 2023, expressing confidence in the UAE's ability to host this climate event. "The hosting of two Arab countries for the 2022 and 2023 consecutive sessions emanates from a deep Arab awareness of the importance of the climate to achieve stability and sustainable growth," the Secretary-General said, stressing the importance of the two sessions in setting rules for evaluating of countries' commitment to implementing the Paris Agreement agenda, and an opportunity to shed light on the issues related to the Arab region as one of the regions most vulnerable to the risks of climate change.
