A passenger train smashed into a minivan in Central Java, killing 12 family members on their way home from a graduation ceremony, a local news report said Sunday. Two children ages 2 and 3 were among those killed in the crash, which also severely injured one other person. The crash occurred Saturday when the family's Toyota Kijang crossed a railway crossing that did not have a gate in Tegal municipality, the Jakarta Post said. The Tegal police department's traffic chief, adjunct commander Yudi Irawan, said the driver apparently did not see the train, which was bound for Semarang from Jakarta, or hear the screams from at least one eyewitness who tried to warn them. The 12 victims died at the scene. The sole survivor, who suffered massive injuries, was taken to a local hospital.
