Twelve people died in a freak train accident at a station in the central Indian state of Madhya Pradesh Sunday, television reports said. The dead, all passengers, were getting off a train at a station near the Madhya Pradesh capital Bhopal, when a second train ran over them, the reports said. All the dead were travelling on the Bhopal-Bina Express train. They were run over by the Swarnjayanti Express that runs between the southern city of Chennai (Madras) and the northern Indian city of Lucknow, Aaj Tak news channel reported. The dead and injured were being rushed to the Hamidia hospital in Bhopal. A police official said 12 people were confirmed dead, but the toll could rise further. The number of injured was not clear, but could be more than 30, the official said. Smaller stations in India often have only one platform and passengers of overcrowded trains tend to disembark on the tracks.
