President Gen. Pervez Musharraf on Saturday appointed the head of Pakistan's powerful spy agency as chairman of the joint chiefs of military staff, the military said. Musharraf also promoted the top general in Karachi, who narrowly escaped assassination by militants in June, as vice chief of staff _ the No. 2 position in the army, an army statement said. The army official said Gen. Ahsanul Haq, head of Inter-Services Intelligence, will replace Gen. Muhammad Aziz Khan, who is retiring on Oct. 7. Haq was promoted to the rank of four-star general Saturday. On Saturday, Musharraf also promoted Lt. Gen. Ahsan Saleem Hayat, the Karachi corps commander, to the rank of four-star general. Hayat will replace Vice Chief of Army Staff Gen. Yousaf Khan, who is also retiring.
