Published in Saudi Press Agency on 10 - 02 - 2020

Prince Abdullah bin Khalid bin Sultan bin Abdulaziz, the Saudi Ambassador to the Republic of Austria and the Kingdom's Governor to the International Atomic Energy Agency, emphasized the Kingdom's special interest in nuclear security and its keenness to be one of the main components of the infrastructure of its national project for peaceful uses of atomic energy, referring to the establishment of the Nuclear and Radiological Monitoring Authority, which has begun its work and responsibilities in the regulatory aspects related to security, safety and nuclear guarantees, and he also affirmed the Kingdom's support for international decisions in this field, verification of human protection and the environment, and its promulgation of the nuclear law that includes aspects related to nuclear security in accordance with international frameworks and standards in addition to organizing the Kingdom - in cooperation with the Agency - for a series of workshops and seminars on developing and building human capacities related to nuclear security areas.
This came in a speech delivered by Prince Abdullah bin Khalid bin Sultan bin Abdulaziz today during his chairmanship of the delegation of the Kingdom participating in the nuclear security conference currently held in the capital Vienna, noting that the Kingdom has consistently supported international resolutions related to nuclear security, including Security Council Resolution 1540, and ratification of the Convention on the Physical Protection, Amendment, and Support of Nuclear Material (CPPNM) for the Code of Conduct for the Safety and Security of Radioactive Sources, in addition to that it is a party in the International Convention for the Suppression of Nuclear Terrorism, and from this standpoint the Kingdom stresses the importance of giving this aspect more international attention in view of the tensions in the Middle East region, and the spread of a number of militias and terrorist groups.
The Kingdom also calls on the international community to reinforce all measures aimed at combating nuclear terrorism, as Prince Abdullah bin Khalid bin Sultan bin Abdulaziz referred to the kingdom's fight against terrorism in general, and nuclear in particular, as the Kingdom initiated a donation of $ 10 million US dollar to establish a specialized center for combating nuclear terrorism in cooperation and under the supervision of the International Atomic Energy Agency , whose construction will begin in the coming period, and in the end, he expressed his hope that this conference will achieve the goals that it aspires to.
