China evacuated 320,000 people from coastal areas as Typhoon Aere hit the mainland Wednesday after killing at least five people on Taiwan, state media said. Aere came ashore at 4:30 p.m. (0830GMT) in Fujian province, south of Shanghai, state television reported in its evening newscast, showing footage of strong winds and driving rain. Cars drove through flooded streets littered with uprooted metal barriers. No injuries or deaths have been reported, China Central Television said. It's the second-strongest storm to hit China this season after Typhoon Rananim, which killed at least 164 people and devastated the Chinese coast south of Shanghai. About 320,000 people in areas affected by the typhoon have been evacuated, CCTV said. The airport in the capital city of Fuzhou has been closed and some 10,000 boats around the coastal province have been secured in harbors, it said. Emergency measures were deployed Wednesday to protect residents and their property, the official Xinhua News Agency said. --SP 1512 Local Time 1212 GMT
